Working on my fitness: How I keep my sanity

If you’ve known me for any length of time, you know working out is important to me. It’s something that’s not a negotiable for me. Why? It’s how I keep sane. It helps me manage stress and anxiety, tames the extra energy I already have (if you know me, you understand!), and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I’ve belonged to a gym of some sort since grade school. I used to play tennis and swim, then moved on to actually working out using the bikes, stair master (loved that thing!), and sometimes the machines (although they used to intimidate me). In 7th grade I fell in love with running and that became my therapy for the next 30 years. I did tennis and cross country skiing all through high school. Then in college, I ran cross country. Once out of college, I continued to run because it didn’t require a gym and I was a poor college grad. I still love to run, but it doesn’t love me back. After one too many injuries, I decided it was time to try something different.

Enter The Firm. I’d always heard about their spin classes. Horror stories about how tough they were. In fact, the reason it too me so long to actually join The FIrm was because I didn’t think I’d be fit enough to do any of the workouts. Turns out I was wrong. In fact, The Firm has been the best gym I’ve ever belonged to. You see all levels working out. Some just starting, others have been going there for 30 years. The community that exists there is unlike any other that I’ve found. I work out with a small group, do spin 3-4 days a week, yoga sculpt, and strength train. I feel the most rounded I have in a long time. So much so that I started to ease back in to running last year. It didn’t last long because winter. And I hate the treadmill, but I’m going to give it another go this spring. Fingers crossed all this cross training has made my body stronger and less resistant to injury.
